Vineyards
Washington's vineyards, 30,000+ acres, are important to produce the region's world-class wines. Among nine American Viticulture Areas - Yakima Valley, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley, Puget Sound, Red Mountain, Columbia Gorge, Horse Heaven Hills, Wahluke Slope, and Rattlesnake Hills - the state has several microclimates suited for growing a variety of wine grapes making it the perfect climate for wine.
The following vineyards are a few of the different sources we use in our grape selection:
-Les Collines (The Foothills) is one of the higher vineyards in the Walla Walla Valley with an upper elevation of 1,500 feet. Soil Moisture and weather data is recorded around the clock and current weather is always posted on the website.
This 150 acre vineyard is one of the valley leaders in minimal input farming with its own composting operation and extensive use of compost tea. It has its own state certified nursery for experiments with and propagation of clones. Shane McKibben is the Vineyard Manager.
Varietals currently grown: Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Malbec, Petite Verdot, Merlot, Semillon, Tempranillo
-Seven Hills Vineyard is Co-Owned by three wineries but sells grapes to more than 30 wineries in Washington and Oregon. Chris Banek is the Vineyard Manager.
The 150 acres use state of the art recording equipment for control of soil moisture and have adopted minimal input farming. This vineyard has one of the finest records of high scores on vineyard designated wines in the state.
Varietals currently grown: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc, Grande Vidure, Semillon
-Milbrandt Vineyards is comprised of seven different vineyard sites in the areas near the towns of Mattawa and George in the Columbia Valley appellation.
The six vineyards on the Wahluke Slope are mostly dedicated to red varieties, which do very well in the warm climate and longer growing season of the Mattawa area. Sundance Vineyard located six miles east of town is becoming well known for the Merlot and Syrah that it produces. Clifton Vineyard just north of town on Highway 243 is producing some very good Grenache and Viognier.
The Evergreen Vineyard which is one mile north of the Gorge concert site is planted mostly to white varieties which show great promise in this cooler climate. The Riesling grown at this site has been included in the Poets Leap and Eroica blends.
This group of vineyards comprised of 850 acres provides 21 varieties of grapes to over fifty Washington wineries.
